What To Plant In The Garden In September

Buttercrunch Lettuce

Any lettuces are perfect to plant in September, but buttercrunch is particularly tasty. These tender but crunchy leaves are perfect for all of your fall salads.

Arugula

The peppery bite of arugula is a welcome addition to the fall garden. Perfect in salads or on sandwiches, arugula, also known as rocket lettuce, is one of my fall garden favorites.

Spinach

This nutrient dense leafy green loves the cool days of September and October. Easy to grow in small spaces and containers, spinach is a fall favorite.

Kale

I don’t plant a fall vegetable garden without adding kale. Lacinato or dinosaur kale is my personal favorite and you can see it here as I’ve harvested it and chopped it to saute.

Collard Greens

Southern gardens abound in all kinds of greens in the fall and winter. From collard greens to mustards to turnip greens, there are many varieties to choose from.

Radishes

This fast-growing root crop has a delicious crunch that’s perfect for fall salads or even fermenting. Add them to fall roasts as well for a pleasant surprise.

Carrots

Carrots can be grown as a fall crop and in some places even left to grow all winter, growing sweeter with the frosts. Consider adding this root vegetable to your garden planning.
